Telehealth and Cancer Care

During the November 9 session of the Association for Value-Based Cancer Care (AVBCC) 10th Annual Summit, Rick Lee, Founder of Quality Oncology, Value Health, Healthrageous, and MeYou Health, moderated a panel of experts who discussed the future of telehealth and the impact of this technology on cancer care.

“Telehealth is our opportunity to reimagine healthcare delivery,” says Joseph Kvedar, MD, President-Elect of the American Telemedicine Association.

According to an American Medical Association survey, the use of digital health tools has risen significantly, and tele-visits have doubled since 2016. Alexandra Drane, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Rebel Health and ARCHANGELS, said that it should not be a conversation about technology, but about humanity and meeting people where they are.

“We’ll know we’re successful with telehealth when we don’t call it telehealth anymore,” noted Ms Drane.

Adam Dicker, MD, PhD, FASTRO, FASCO, Director of the Jefferson Center for Digital Health, said that there needs to be more education on telehealth for physicians, and a foundation should be built in medical schools.

Wearables may be the first step in closing the digital divide, said Sue Zbikowski, PhD, Chief Executive Officer of inZights Consulting. Research shows that 81% of Americans own a smartphone. Although the technology is available, there are still some flaws. A patient may not have the coverage or service for certain activities, and while some patients will engage with technologies, they can later lose interest.

Bob Gold, Chief Behavioral Technologist and Chief Executive Officer of GoMo Health, who helped develop a virtual care coordinator program called Concierge Care, said that the focus of these technologies is not to treat the disease, but to treat the people, and that can be a patient or caregiver.
